Hippopotamus: Hippopotamus amphibius
Pygmy Hippopotamus: Choeropsis Liberiensis
Hippos are the 3rd largest animal on land following the Elephant (4-5.5 tons) and the White Rhino (4-5 tons). Hippos weigh 3,000-4,000 pounds or 1.5-2 TONS!!!!!! WOW!!!!!! But they can still out run an Olympic runner, they have been clocked at a whopping 30 MPH (I weigh about 3,900 pounds less and I can only run 10 MPH). The Hippo is one of the most aggressive animals in the world, and is said to be the most dangerous animal in Africa (how can something that is so cute be so dangerous?) The Hippo only lives 20 to 40 years (in the wild).
When diving, a hippo presses its ears flat against its head. This keeps out most of the water. When it surfaces, it shakes out the rest by wiggling its ears hard. Before they dive, hippos take a deep breath and close their nostrills tightly. Adult hippos can stay underwater for as long as five of six minutes. The ears, eyes, and nostrils of the common Hippo are all on the top of its head so that it can see hear and breathe with the rest of its body is under water. The water is verry important to a Hippo, the water helps the Hippo not to have sunburn
Every thing about the common hippo is heavy. Its head takes up a third of its body and can weigh 1/2 a ton.
The Hippopotamus got its name from the greeks. In greek Hippopotamus means "River Horse" (but hippos are NOT related to horses)
Hippo only fight for a few reasons. Otherwise they are very calm. They will fight any
